Wake Up, Soul!

KEY: G

DIFFICULTY: 3

“Wake Up, Soul!” is a short, simple melody for sleepy mornings. It’s inspired by “Awake, My Soul, and With the Sun” by Thomas Ken, an Anglican pastor who ran a boarding school for boys. He wrote a series of devotional prayers for morning, evening, and other times of the day. The final verse of Thomas Ken’s hymn is known today as the Doxology (“Praise God from whom all blessings flow…”).

The melody for “Wake Up, Soul” is entirely pentatonic, meaning that it can be played with only the black keys on the piano (if you play it in G-flat instead of G). It uses do, re, mi, sol, and la but omits ti and fa.

LYRICS:

Wake up, soul, and with the sun,
Do your work until it’s done.
Life is brief and heaven waits,
It’s time to serve the Lord!

Wake up, soul, the day is new;
God has mercies made for you!
Yesterday is come and gone –
It’s time to serve the Lord!

Chorus
Wake up, stand up,
Look up, sleepy soul!
While the sun’s up,
It’s time to serve the Lord!

Wake up, soul, away with fear;
God is strong and God is here!
Set your heart on things above:
It’s time to serve the Lord!

Wake up, soul, put on the Lord;
Work and pray for your reward.
Sleep will come when work is done:
It’s time to serve the Lord!
