History
“Wake Up, Soul!” is a short, simple children’s song for sleepy mornings. It’s inspired by “Awake, My Soul, and With the Sun” by Thomas Ken, an Anglican pastor who ran a boarding school for boys. He wrote a series of devotional prayers for morning, evening, and other times of the day.
The final verse of Thomas Ken’s original hymn is known today as the Doxology (“Praise God from who all blessings flow…”).
Melodic Content
The melody for “Wake Up, Soul” is entirely pentatonic, meaning that it can be played with only the black keys on the piano (if you play it in G-flat instead of G). It uses do, re, mi, sol, and la but omits ti and fa.
